Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and Raman spectroscopies are important tools for characterizing organic and inorganic materials. Although both use light to elucidate molecular structure, the two techniques are spectroscopically very different and often provide complementary types of information. For example, when examining a blue cotton fiber by both techniques, FTIR will detect the cellulose material, while Raman will mainly detect the phthalocyanine dye.

This webinar compares the two techniques and demonstrates their utility in determining the composition of diverse range of materials without the need for extensive sample prep. In addition to highlighting real-world applications, we will describe EAG’s unique problem-solving approach for the analysis of complex mixtures.

About the Presenter:

YSchneider photoYanika Schneider, Ph.D., Senior Scientist and Project Manager
Yanika Schneider has over a decade of experience in polymer science and materials characterization. She received her PhD in materials chemistry from UC Santa Barbara, which was followed by a postdoctoral appointment at UC Berkeley with a focus on polymer characterization. Before joining EAG in 2013, Dr. Schneider briefly worked at an energy startup helping a nine-person team develop nanoporous carbon supercapacitors. At her current position at EAG, she specializes in the characterization of a variety of materials using infrared and x-ray fluorescence spectroscopies. She is also a project manager who oversees complex multi-technique experiments including failure analysis investigations, deformulations and quality control assessment.
